How the calculation works
The calculator applies the general daily guide from the Cornell Feline Health Center to the weight you enter:
Daily total water ≈ body weight (kg) × 52 mL
If you enter pounds, the calculator converts them to kilograms first.
For example, a 10-pound cat is about 4.54 kg. The general estimate is about 236 mL, or one US cup, of total water per day.
How much water should a cat drink?
The Cornell Feline Health Center gives a general guide of about 4 US fluid ounces of total water per 5 pounds of lean body weight each day. That is about one cup for an average 10-pound cat.
This total includes water in food, so a cat eating wet food may drink less from a bowl than a cat eating dry food. It is general information, not a personal target: age, diet, weather, illness, medication, and water loss can change an individual cat's needs.
When to speak with your veterinarian
